Homeowners are often surprised to find how much air escapes from their homes daily. In this post, we bust five of the most common myths about air leaks, energy loss, and insulation—and how fixing them can save you serious money.
Myth #1: “If My House Was Leaking Air, I’d Feel It”
Most air leaks are invisible and silent. They happen behind walls, above ceilings, and through recessed lights or attic hatches. Unless you have a blower door test or thermal camera scan, you probably won’t know where they’re coming from—or how severe they are.
Real Story: We recently helped a couple in Mentor, OH, who said their upstairs felt 10 degrees hotter in the summer. A blower door test revealed their attic hatch was leaking more than 150 CFM (cubic feet per minute) of air—enough to offset their entire HVAC system. After sealing and insulating, the difference was immediate.
Myth #2: “My Insulation Is New, So I’m Covered”
Not all insulation is created equal—and even new insulation can underperform if air sealing wasn’t done first. Without sealing the gaps and cracks, insulation acts more like a sponge than a blanket.
Tip: Air sealing is just as important as the insulation itself. That’s why we developed The AIRLOCK Air Seal process: to stop leaks before we insulate.
Myth #3: “My Windows Are to Blame for My Energy Bills”
Windows are a common scapegoat. But more often than not, it’s the attic and wall cavities that are leaking conditioned air. Insulation and air sealing typically offer a better ROI than replacing windows.
Analogy: Imagine wearing a heavy winter coat but leaving it unzipped—that’s what skipping insulation is like.
Myth #4: “I Already Had Spray Foam, So I’m Set”
Spray foam is a great product in the right application. But we’ve seen dozens of homes with spray foam applied improperly—or without addressing moisture issues first. In some cases, homeowners ended up with mold.
Pro Insight: We use Nu-Wool cellulose insulation, which maintains its R-value even in cold conditions, offers sound control, and is mold-resistant.
Myth #5: “This Must Cost a Fortune”
Actually, most of our customers are surprised how affordable insulation is, especially with financing options and long-term energy savings. Many of our jobs pay for themselves within 2–4 years.
Bonus: You can pay with your energy savings over time.
